Member Profile - Westport Innovations

Innovative Canadian Technology

WP TruckBased in Vancouver, Westport Innovations is a leading global supplier of engines that operate on clean-burning gaseous fuels such as compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, hydrogen, and biomethane made from upgraded biogas from waste sources. Established in 1995 as a technology spin-off from the University of British Columbia, Westport consistently ranks as one of Canada’s leading cleantech companies.

The Westport HD business unit offers its GX natural gas engine system for heavy-duty trucks with reduced emissions while preserving the power, torque, and fuel efficiency of a diesel engine. This 15-litre engine is currently available in 400–475 horsepower ratings through PACCAR companies Kenworth and Peterbilt in North America. A higher horsepower product is also available from Kenworth in Australia. In addition, Westport HD is working with Volvo Powertrain, developing biogas- and natural gas-fuelled engines for Volvo heavy trucks with a goal of future commercial availability.
